Today, the United Nations General Assembly appointed Mr. António Guterres of Portugal as the ninth UN Secretary-General . Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said about Mr. Guterres: "I have long valued his advice, and long admired his spirit of service. He is a wonderful choice to steer this Organization as we build on the progress of the past decade while addressing the insecurity and uncertainties of today’s world." Mr. Guterres was Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015. He will take office on 1 January for an initial term of five years.
